The troublesome, robotic dragon in Disneyland’s Fantasmic! was removed from the show indefinitely after breaking down Saturday on stage.

The 45-foot, animatronic dragon collapsed during Saturday’s first performance of Fantasmic! on Disneyland’s Rivers of America. The dragon, modeled after the Maleficent character from “Sleeping Beauty,” was left out of Sunday night’s shows. Find another photo of the broken Disneyland dragon.

Disney officials are unsure when the dragon will be back in the show.

“The dragon in Fantasmic experienced a technical issue last Saturday night (Aug. 28),” said Betsy Sanchez, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman, in a prepared statement. “We are working to fix the problem. At this time we are not able to determine when the dragon will reappear in the show, however, it will continue to run at its scheduled times.”

Saturday’s failure came almost a year after the dragon debuted in the show after delays because of technical problems.

Last summer, the fire-breathing dragon was supposed to be the centerpiece of the Disneyland Resort’s summer entertainment, appearing on promotional materials as a new feature for the season. But crews had trouble getting it to work. See a previous story about the Disneyland dragon problems.

The dragon appeared in public for the first time Sept. 1, which was after the official summer season had ended. Because of the problems, some Disney fans gave the dragon the nickname of Murphy after Murphy’s Law. Read a story about last year’s Disneyland dragon debut.

Fantasmic! had been appearing every night during the 2010 summer season, which officially ended Sunday. The show now is on a weekends-only schedule.
